Girls varsity tennis defeated York School 4-3 in the first round of CCS yesterday at the Decathlon Club to advance to the second round of CCS.

Number one singles player Isabelle Gross (11) lost her match 1-2, while Arden Hu (12) and Gloria Guo (9) both won their singles matches in straight sets. First doubles team, Era Iyer (10) and Connie Miao (10) narrowly won the first set of their match 7-5 and then dominated the second set 6-0. Number two doubles, Karina Butani (9) and Maya Valluru (10) won their match 6-2, 6-2, while third doubles, Kathleen Cheng (9) and Aliesa Bahri (9) lost.

Kathleen attributes the team’s success to being placed against a team that had not competed in CCS in 12 years.

“I think we were pretty motivated to win because we’ve put in a lot of hours for this, but I also guess we got lucky for the team we got put against,” she said.

Isabelle shares this sentiment, adding that girls felt motivated to finish the season on a good note.

“We wanted to end the season trying our best and doing as well as possible, and I guess we just took care of business,” she said.

The team played Menlo School in the second round of CCS at 2 p.m. today at Menlo School. The girls lost all seven matches to Menlo, ending the year’s tennis season.
