Green onion pancakes are a favorite of many in Asian countries, and there are many variations of this recipe.

Okay, so it’s a bit late for Chinese New Year, but this is still a great recipe to make year-round. This is a slightly chewy and incredibly flavorful recipe, and seriously, nobody’s heard of green onion pancakes before. Try something unique!

Why you should make it: It’s pretty darn impressive, and it’s Chinese, which means that you can go around bragging to your friends that you’re an accomplished Oriental chef— without lying!

Ingredients:

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 egg

1 cup water

½ teaspoon salt

1 tbsp melted butter

2 stalks of green onions

1 teaspoon vegetable oil

Equipment:

1 knife

1 medium-sized mixing bowl

1 medium-sized, nonstick skillet

1 nonstick spatula

 

Directions:

1) Finely chop the green onions and set them aside.

2) Add the flour, melted butter, and eggs into a mixing bowl.

3) Set your electric whisk to the lowest speed and start to blend the ingredients together. While you’re whisking, slowly pour the water in.

4) Pour the chopped green onions into the batter at the very end—if you do it in the beginning, the end result will be unpleasantly mushy.

5) Drizzle vegetable oil into a skillet, making sure to distribute it evenly across the surface of the pan.

6) Pour a portion of the batter onto the skillet, using just enough to cover the surface with a thin layer of it.

7) Allow the pancake to cook for about 1 1/2 minutes on each side before using your spatula to flip it over and repeating the process on the other side.

8) Cut into slices, and enjoy!
