Aathira Menon (10) and Mary Najibi (10) discuss what to write in their letters to their eagle buddies. Some sophomores found it difficult to write the letter, while others wrote to the bottom of the card.

The Eagle Buddies program was explained to the sophomore class at the weekly class meeting in the Nichols Hall Atrium.

Eagle Buddies is a program that pairs up one or two sophomores with a third grader. The program not only gives third graders an impression on high school students, but also challenges sophomores to take the chance to test their patience.

“I think it’s a really cool thing that we can teach them what it is like in the upper school, and you can make them feel more comfortable around people who are older than them,” Joshua Hung (10) said.

Furthermore, sophomores can take this chance to act like role models, treating their eagle buddies as younger siblings.

“The lower school people will have somebody to look up to and what to expect,” Kevin Ke (10) said.

Students who have younger siblings can take this opportunity to bond with younger children who are not related to them. The sophomores can teach what they learned when they were younger to the third graders.

“It puts a lot of pressure on us because we have to be good, responsible individuals, that show the core values of the Harker community,” Dakota McNealy (10) said.

The sophomore class student council prepares part of the Eagle Buddies Program. Though a majority of it is run by class dean Dr. Harley, president Michael Zhao (10) said that he hopes student council can play a bigger role in this program in the future.

“It can help us by serving as a sort of calming tool to help us temporarily forget about the worries of high school,” Michael said.

Even though some sophomores look at this program as a waste of time, most are looking forward to the future experience.
