Giants come back to tie World Series 2-2
Arjun Ashok (12) wore a Giants sweatshirt to school before attending game three of the World Series last friday. The series is currently tied at 2-2.
The San Francisco Giants took a commanding lead in game four against the Kansas City Royals last night with an 11-4 victory, tying the World Series at 2-2.
Despite their dominating game one win, the Giants fell behind 1-3 in the World Series after a 2-7 loss in game two and 2-3 loss in game three. Last night’s win has refueled hopes of a third World Championship in five years.
“I think they have a good change of winning the World Series,” Cameron Palte (11) said.
The Giants’ success has prompted students who had not been fans before to follow the series and join the San Francisco hype.
“I’m generally not really a baseball follower, but I mean San Francisco is our home team, so I am definitely rooting the Giants on this year,” said Nikita Mittal (12). “From what I’ve heard and seen so far, I think they can go all the way.”
Some Harker students took advantage of the three day weekend by watching or attending the games on Friday and Saturday night. Arjun Ashok (12) went to game three on Friday.
“It altogether was a really awesome experience even though they lost. The atmosphere was electric, and the fans were awesome,” he said. “I hadn’t been to a MLB playoff game ever before this, so it was cool to see how crazy the atmosphere was.”
Here’s a recap of what happened in the last two games:
Game Three:
Game three started off in a strange manner, as the American flag tore straight down the middle, while the pregame national anthem was sung.
Tim Hudson started pitching for the Giants, and Jeremy Guthrie was starting pitcher for Kansas City.
Kansas City got off to an early 1-0 lead after Lorenzo Cain grounded out to shortstop, allowing Eduardo Escobar to score from third at the top of the first inning. The Royals’ score was followed by three straight Giant outs in the bottom of the first.
The game remained scoreless for the next five innings. At the top of the sixth, Alex Gordon doubled to deep right, and Escobar scored his second run. At this point, Javier Lopez relieved Hudson. Eric Hosmer singled to center, and Gordon scored another run, giving the Royals a 3-0 lead.
The Giants promptly responded with a run from Brandon Crawford after Michael Morse doubled to left field. Buster Posey was then grounded out to second, bringing in another run from Morse.
Sergio Romo pitched the seventh inning and started the eighth, Jeremy Affeldt pitched the remainder of the eighth and started off the ninth. Santiago Casilla relieved Affeldt to close out the ninth inning.
The final score of the game was 2-3.
Game Four:
Ryan Vogelsong started as pitcher for the Giants, and Jason Vargas pitched for Kansas City.
In the first inning, Gregor Blanco scored off of a ground ball from Hunter Pence bringing in the first Giants run of the game.
Despite the early run, the Royals came back in the third inning to put the Giants in a 4-1 deficit. Gordon scored off a single from Hosmer. Omar Infante hit a single to center, allowing Cain and Hosmer to bring in two more runs. After a Salvador Perez single, Mike Moustakas brought in the fourth Kansas City run of the third inning. Jean Machi relieved Vogelsong as pitcher to finish off the top of third.
The Giants responded with a run from Duffy off of a single from Posey to left field. Yusmeiro Petit pitched the next three innings for the Giants. The Giants took control of the remainder of the game, leaving the Royals scoreless and bringing in nine more runs.
At the bottom of the fifth, Pence singled to center, bringing in a run from J Panik. Perez hit a sacrifice fly for Pence to score and tie the game at 4-4. In the next inning, Blanco, Posey and Pence scored off of singles from Pablo Sandoval and Brandon Belt. The score stood at 4-7.
In the seventh inning, Affeldt relieved Petit as Giants pitcher. At the bottom of the seventh, Crawford scored after Blanco bunted a single and Morse got on third base due to a throwing error by Royals’ pitcher, Tim Collins. Joe Panik then doubled to deep left center, allowing Morse and Blanco to score. Pence doubled to left field, and Panik brought in the last run of the game.
The final score of the game was 11-4.
