“Swimming has definitely been a big part of me,” Vivian Wang (12) said. “It’s much more than an exercise or a sport. It’s taught me a lot of things, and it’s really helped me become a tougher person, both in school and in life. There have been a lot of times where I’ve wanted to give up, but since the people surrounding you are still going and still trying to do better, you don’t want to be the one who’s on the wall resting. You just want to push yourself to be just as good.”

“A lot of people think that being positive and optimistic is not the same as being realistic,” Divija Bhimaraju (12) said. “I think that thats a terrible way to look at life because ideals get the world moving. If you dont have an ideal––part of the word ‘ideal’ is the word ‘idea’––if you dont have an idea, if you dont want to take the world forward, if youre satisfied with where we are, then theres never progress. Theres never growth or change. That isnt to say that you shouldnt be happy with the status quo because Im a firm believer of living in the moment, but I think there needs to be a balance between accepting the situation right now and also thinking about what you can do in the future. The minute that we as a culture stop looking forward, stop trying to grow and improve, is the minute that we start losing purpose.”

“I believe in actively seeing flaws and problems while still enjoying and appreciating things, because nothings perfect, and you dont have to hate everything and be cynical because nothings perfect, Sahana Srinivasan (12) said. I enjoy flawed things and value them even as I acknowledge that there might be something problematic.”

“Its kind of interesting that when people think of Liana, they think of dance,” Liana Wang (12) said. “Theres nothing necessarily wrong with that, but I wish that they took time to realize that Im not just a dancer, and that I do many other things. I just did a piece recently that was a combination of spoken-word poetry and dance, and it was primarily about stereotypes and grouping people into these different categories — and trying to break away from that. I think people should define themselves by who they want to be. I dont think you can say, Oh, I am this, I am that, no, you dont even really need to define yourself — you can just be as you are.”

“Kung fu kind of sparked my interest in working out and bodybuilding in general, Marcus Chen (12) said. Its not like school, where you have classes and you sit down with other people. Its just you and your material, and how fast or how quick and how well you learn that material is dependent on how much you want to put in.”

“Im someone who really tends to think about the past and dream about the future, and so this year Ive really tried to live more in the moment because Im surrounded by all these people and things that make me so happy, Sharon Yan (12) said. “I definitely think that reading is a big part of empathy, Makenzie Tomihiro (12) said. Because, the way I look at it, it’s like everyone is the main character of their story, and every story has its own conflicts, and every protagonist has an antagonist, and while I’m the main character of my story, all these supporting characters have their own main stories as well.”

“When I got to high school, I was trying to get into these honors classes because I felt that by being in these higher level classes, I would be validated,” Aliesa Bahri (12) said. “It was really difficult my freshman year to meet the requirements, but I did, and I moved up in all my classes. When I got there, that barrier that I felt between me and everyone else was still there, and I couldn’t get rid of it. It was only when I started to ignore it and to stop comparing myself to other people, which I had been doing unintentionally, and to focus on who I am and what I wanted did that barrier disappear completely. Only by trying not to tackle it did I actually let it disappear.”
