Emily Tan, Winged Post Co-Editor-in-Chief

Emily Tan (12) is the co-editor-in-chief of The Winged Post. This is her fourth year on staff, previously serving as the Winged Post features editor, and she hopes to grow along with the staff to showcase stories in a visually striking way. When she’s not writing or fangirling over mindblowing newspaper designs, Emily enjoys rearranging her room with the moral support of her cats, attempting the latest nail art trends and taste-testing variations of matcha drinks.

As the fall semester continues online, students find that fashion can still be that constant outlet of personal expression in their lives. Though our social interactions are limited, it does not mean that our outfits have to be.

Tara Beaver Coronado poses at her vineyard in Northern California. Despite the 10 to 20 year commitment of a vineyard, Coronado loves facing challenges, asking questions, and continually learning. Since planting her vineyard in April 2018, Coronado just completed her first harvest in late August of this year, a three-night culmination of two years of work.

“The fact that you keep having success where you keep actually being able to finish the puzzle, that keeps you doing it. It's fun to have that moment where you can keep doing it. I'm good at recognizing when things are too hard, and then I stop doing things that are too hard. Then, I'm at a point where I can solve problems and it's a rewarding experience,” Jeffrey Kwan (12) said.

“One motto I believe in is, ‘why not?’ A lot of times I question that to people who aren't as fully willing to do things and doing things without hesitation because at the end of the day we only really spend four years of our lives here. It's really special for us to be able to engage with each other through this really transformative period in our lives and I think that ‘why not?’ really captures how I feel about taking opportunities and just making the most of it,” Chloe Chen (12) said.

“On stage, it's really fulfilling to act and get reactions from audiences, which is why live theater is so unique when compared to film acting. But I think the community that I've been a part of is what keeps me going back, because it's the same people for every production but also, there are new people for different productions, so you get to meet new people and also spend time with old friends,” Katelyn Chen (12) said.

“I believe that the business side is the best means by which to advance the CS side because you can take a community of people who love CS, and that stays constant. But, if you focus on bringing it to everywhere imaginable, then that suddenly creates an ecosystem where even more people can access it,” Nikhil Sharma (12) said.

“There's a division between your character that you're portraying on stage and who you are in real life, but it's kind of not necessarily a straight-cut division. I felt the confidence I gained as a person and the energy that I had translated to my artistic work and made me a better performer and more confident and comfortable on stage, which lended myself to the charisma on stage that I had. I guess people noticed, which gave me even more confidence — I felt like I was doing something right,” Joel Morel (12) said.

“My life quote is from 'Up,' because I'm a giant Disney fan. It's ‘Adventure is out there.’ I love 'Up' because its message reinforces that adventure, friendship and excitement don't really have an age on it, so it always pushes me to do better because I realize that. Hopefully I'll be 80 years old, and I'll still be able to push myself,” Allison Cartee (12) said.

“I think letting go of the people that I thought meant the most to me but were really bad for me and toxic — just letting them go was a really big decision… I talked to my friends and I took a step back and realized what was happening. [Now] I feel better, I feel free. I feel like I can make mature decisions even though adults may not think so. I feel like I can do anything. I’m confident in myself to make the right decision,” Rithi Jayam (12) said.
