Jonathan Xue (12) is an Editor-in-Chief of Humans of Harker, and this is his third year on staff. This year, he looks forward to telling the stories of the Class of 2025 and designing the publication’s in-print magazine. In his free time, he enjoys running, playing poker and chasing the eccentricities of life.

“People should take risks and step out of their comfort zone. Life wouldn't be fun if you're always just doing what everyone else is doing. Life is not fun if you're just following a designed path to some destination. It's fun if you take risks and do things that genuinely interest you and, in some sense, scare you," senior Kai Hong said.

“You never know until you try. One of the things I value is curiosity and just not being sure that you know everything. Maybe you know a lot about a subject. I like to think I know a lot about CS or math. I'm interested in STEM, but there's always so much more to learn. There's so much more. You can always go so much deeper and with both life, intellectually, academically, you never know until you try," senior Grant Yang said.

“You can’t wait for things to happen. You have to drive yourself to sign up for things, show initiative and reach out to people. A lot of it is luck, but you have to create your own luck by showing initiative. In sports, you can’t just wish to be healthier or stronger — you have to push yourself and take action. I try to be a well-balanced and healthy person: committed to my ideals of health, honesty and helping others through Honor Council and research," Marcus Blennemann ('25) said.

“I want to leave behind a better copy editing department. Copy editing has a lot of potential. It can be a very useful thing when it's done thoroughly. We have good copy editors, but the system sometimes is a little outdated, and I just want to integrate it more into the newsroom and the production cycle. I want copy editing to be the best that it can. Outside of journalism, I'm just happy to be a part of my grade level and sometimes there doesn't need to be a great legacy," Jeremy Peng ('25) said.

“The reason why I want to impart knowledge to others is because as I was growing up, I was in a community where people were constantly telling me and showing me cool theorems and ideas. That has changed the way I think. It's a really valuable way to give back to the community, and I enjoy it because I was in their shoes as well. I was someone who learned these theorems, so I feel a sense of connection with the people I teach," senior Aarush Vailaya said.

“I like making things, and tech is an easy way to do it. I can make a project or make an app that does something. I like being able to solve the problem itself, being able to take that problem or feedback and say, ‘Ok, wait, why is it confusing?’ and break that down into even smaller steps. HarkerDev’s helped me enjoy the process of doing things," senior Nelson Guo said.

“There's a lot of value in every moment and everyone around you. I appreciate people who just appreciate the little things. For me, I feel like everyone you meet can teach you a little bit, and that's something that I've really internalized over the years. I think that's part of why I like being around people and different communities so much. Because in each of these communities, you can learn so many different things from everyone," Olivia Xu ('24) said.

“Throughout my playing and training, it’s taught me that hard work always beats talent. When you're working on something, you’ve always got to persevere through the challenges because, in a squash match, no matter who you’re playing, it’s never going to be easy. You've always got to keep going and keep pushing," Varun Fuloria ('24) said.

“I feel like golf is fun. When I play really well, it gives me a sense of ‘I want to keep on playing’. I always want to get better. In golf, everything is really dependent on my actions, so it puts a lot of pressure on me, but I always want to get better," Emi Fujimura (12) said.

“Along with motivation comes being able to adapt. Just because you fail the first time shouldn't mean that whatever you're doing isn't right for you. Sometimes it just means that you have to improve on areas you're weak on. By doing that, I learned that being motivated and having an open mindset is really what keeps me going,” Chloe Lee (12) said.

“[In] golf, I realized that there’s only so much you can control through technique. If you can really just focus on feeling the club and getting your shot and executing something you visualize, you have a much more productive and enjoyable experience. I tend to view a lot of things like that. Even in the way I study, the way I approach the classes, I try to make them as artistically enjoyable as possible, always trying to find a way to sort of visualize an outcome and play around with things until I get it," Athreya Daniel (12) said.
