“Fulfillment is very important to me. I want to make sure that I'm doing things that are worth my time and things I think have a lot of value and that I believe in 110%. In all the different initiatives I start or any extracurricular I do, I want there to be a tangible impact. Even if that impact is I put a smile on these people’s faces, I was still able to improve this experience for this person,” Kimi Yashar (‘26) said.

“Writing is a way for me to express my worldview. I tend to see the world in colors and images, and being able to express that is really a gift to me. Creative writing is something that I would like to do for the rest of my life, and it's just so intrinsic in a way that I can't imagine a life without it,” Helen Gu (’26) said.

“The role of authenticity is very important to me. I really value letting nature run its course. In Model UN, I'm authentic to myself because I'm very direct. I believe you should not conform to what other people think. Everyone is an individual, and you should be comfortable with yourself at the individual level instead of trying to be comfortable at the social level,” Victoria Ma (‘26) said.

Humans of Harker: Nature, nuance and nonconformity

The wind carries the faint chirps of birdsong to the balcony. Crouching down, Victoria Ma (‘26) clips the leaves of her lemon tree before meticulously checking each yellow fruit. Gripping her shears,...

“My dad, whenever I wasn't able to solve a problem, would say ‘You can't look at the solution — you have to keep on trying until you get the solution.’ That's guided me through high school. For math problems, I don't like looking at the solution very often because I think it ruins the problem. You can never solve that problem again. That's something I live by: try and solve everything,” Mihir Gupta (‘26) said.

“I definitely bring this diverse perspective into all of my leadership, so I try to make sure everyone's heard and everyone's seen. I'm trying to make sure everyone's accommodated and no one's feeling alienated. I really try to keep a welcoming presence and make sure to hype everyone up. That's the type of leader I am,” Elie Ahluwalia (’26) said.

“Go Elie!” Under the searing football lights and chilly fall winds on Harker Day, Elie Ahluwalia (’26) looks up at the cheering crowd, full of the faces of people she loves. From classmates...

“In operations research, you're taking a real-life system of tangible, moving parts and objects and you're translating it into a bunch of numbers and variables, and you come out with some algorithm that tells you an important, optimized number. It’s interesting to adopt that philosophy in life, to mathematically calculate your best expected outcome,” Alan Shen ('26) said.

“I want to be someone that's there for my teammates. I do joke around a lot, but I want to be someone who's there on a more personal level for my teammates rather than just being someone who was a key part of us going to NorCal and states. There’s a term in sports where you're the glue person, so I’d like to be the glue of our team,” Kimaya Mehta (‘26) said.

“What ties my passions together is the desire for self-expression. Expressing myself creatively is something that comes naturally to me, and I don’t ever want to take that part of myself away. Creativity is not exactly a learned skill; it's innate for me. That’s why it's been important to express myself, and it has really grown me as a person,” Carissa Wu (’26) said.

“Playing in club volleyball, meeting all of these teammates and being friends with them has given me a lot of cool experiences and viewpoints on life. Similarly, Student Council has transformed me into just someone who is more open to diversity and willingness to hear and elevate other people's voices. I've come to value each person, what each person brings to the table and how different perspectives can ultimately build a better solution,” Luke Wu (’26) said.
