Fifty Harker students attended the 2026 Synopsys Science and Technology Championship, which hosted 1,250 middle and high school students from across Santa Clara County at the at the San Jose Convention Center on Tuesday.
Students stood by their displays and delivered oral presentations to circulating panels of judges, answering specific questions about their independent research. They presented work across specialized fields such as Chemistry, Physics and Astronomy, Engineering, and Biohealth.
Sophomore Alexander Maxim attended the event and engineered a computational health project.
“It was my first year, and I was really passionate about research and my topic,” Alexander said. “I think I prepared well by reviewing my code and creating questions about my poster to respond to.”
Organized by the Santa Clara Valley Science and Engineering Fair Association (SCVSEFA), the regional competition featured a convention-style poster session. Throughout the school year, students dedicated months to developing, testing and refining their projects before presenting their findings, working in school-based labs, independent research facilities or from home steups.
Junior Cynthia Wang developed an MRI-based approach to detect Parkinson’s Disease.
“It was very inspiring to talk to some of the judges,” Cynthia said. “I’m in the biomedical, health and science category, and the main portion about it is about actually connecting to the medical world and understanding why your project can benefit others medically.”
Following the individual judging rounds, students reconvened to view other projects on the convention floor.
Biology and Research teacher Terese Navarra, who oversaw Harker laboratory work and managed logistics for the event, observed the students’ interactions with judges throughout the afternoon.
“As I was walking around, I noticed the judges taking a lot of interest in our posters, so that was really exciting to see,” Navarra said. “It was cool to see the progress of the experiments all the way from January, when approval happened, till today. It’s really exciting to see everyone going home with high spirits, and I’m excited for the results to come out.”
Prior to the judging, students visited the convention center on Monday to check in and set up their poster displays.
