Boys and girls water polo play home opener

Boys and girls water polo play home opener

The boys and girls Varsity water polo teams opened the season on September 16, both losing to opponent Wilcox High School.

Boys Varsity was defeated 9-3, with Chris Ng (12) scoring twice and Gilad Nilo (10) earning the remaining point.

“We could have played a lot better,” boys Varsity coach Ted Ujifusa said.” The team’s fairly new, and we’re missing big players from last year, so everybody is assuming a different role in terms of what they have to do for us to win. It’s a growing process, and we’re having some issues early on.”

When asked how they felt about the game, the players were dejected but determined.

“[The game was] bad. We could have done better, but [now] that we’ve seen our competition we know how hard we have to work,” team captains Chris Ng (12) and Rex Chen (12) said.

This loss to Wilcox brings their current overall record to two wins and two losses.

The girls team also lost their match, ending the game with a final score of 14-4, bringing their league record to 0-2. Keri Clifford (10) scored 2 goals, and Daphne Millard (10) and Joy Li (10) scored one goal each.  Although discontented with their loss, many players saw some improvements and were optimistic about upcoming games.

“The game was challenging.  Wilcox is the best team in our league, but I thought we put up a strong fight. I think we have to focus more offensively in practice and work on our 6 on 5 opportunities, but I think when we play them again later this season it will be a much closer game,” Keri Clifford (10) said.

“Today’s game against Wilcox High School was not our best game, but we all gave it our best effort,” Cynthia Shwe (12) said. “During the first half, we weren’t completely focused and a little sloppy, but by the second half, we improved so much. We communicated more worked harder as a team, which lead to a better half than the first. We will definitely continue improving in future games.”
