On Tuesday, January 3, the varsity basketball team defeated Eastside College Prep 52 – 42 at home for its first league win of the season.
This win is the first of fourteen league games leading up to the CCS tournament in February and leaves the team with an 8-3 overall record.
According to Head Coach Butch Keller, the team’s tough defense was the key in building its lead in the first half. After halftime adjustments, including a focus on rebounding, the Eagles kept their lead for the rest of the game, leading to a victory over Eastside College Prep by 10 points, with a final score of 52-42.
“We just shared the ball more; that was the big difference [in the second half],” Keller said. “We ran the floor better, so when you run the floor better, it spreads it out, which was the difference in the first and second quarters[…] We [also] rebounded better. We got some fresh people in.”
Some players noted the significance of defensive play in the game’s victory.
“Defense was more important last night because by stopping the ball, we got to score more,” William Deng (10) said.
The team faces Menlo School on Friday in the Blackford Gym and will play Priory and Crystal Springs Uplands next week.
