The upper school chess team won the team championship award at the K-12 National High School Chess Championships in Atlanta this weekend, with Vignesh Panchanatham (10) placing first overall.

Students Richard Yi (12), Michael Wang, Shaunak Maruvada (9), Richard Wang (9) and Evan Lohn (12), along with Vignesh, traveled to Atlanta in their first time participating in the competition.

“I was super happy to learn that we won [the team championship] after all the hard work our team put into the tournament up to that point,” Evan said.

Through hosting the championship, the U.S. Chess Federation aims to foster an appreciation for scholastic chess.
