Junior Rachel Cheng and Senior Doreene Kang, who both plan to continue playing volleyball in college, were recognized in the Mercury News last month and named to the All-Mercury News Honorable Mention volleyball team because of the skills they displayed as a part of the varsity girls team last fall.

“There are plenty of other people on that list that are really good, and it’s so cool to be recognized,” Rachel said. “I love my team so much, and I’m friends with all of them. I play harder for them, and I absolutely love celebrating all the big moments together.”

Rachel, who was one of Doreene’s teammates on the varsity team this year, commented on Doreene’s recognition in The Mercury News.

“Doreene is the best,” she said. “She’s the middle blocker and it essential to the team for setting up the defense. If she can’t block and be set up in the right place, it’s unlikely that our defense will be successful. She’s such a modest player and we’re definitely going to miss her next year.”

The Mercury News often posts high school sports news from the Bay Area and highlights players and coaches from schools in the area after the sports seasons are over. Eagles in other sports have been named to this list a few times in the past as well.
