The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards named four Upper School students national winners.

Junior Kaity Gee’s flash fiction work “If I Have a Daughter” and senior Suzy Luo’s poem “Searching for Strongly Regular Graphs” were awarded Gold Medals. Sophomore Andrew Rule picked up two Silver Medals for his short stories “Abbeyman Funerary and Post-Mortem Services” and “The Cellar-Keeper’s Tale” and Meilan Steimle (10) won a Silver Medal in the Personal Essay/Memoir category for “Differentiating Equations.”

According to Scholastic, works are assessed according to three criteria: originality, technical skill and emergence of personal vision. Pieces are first entered through state competitions and are placed in Gold Key, Silver Key or Honorable Mention categories. Gold Key winners advanced to the finals, where they are evaluated on a national level.

In June, the medalists are invited to New York City, where a series of events, including exhibitions at Sheila C. Johnson Design Center at The New School’s Parsons School of Design and Pratt Institute’s Pratt Manhattan Gallery, will be held in their honor.

Kaity shared her experience with winning a Gold Medal and gave some insight into the work behind the award.
