Natasha Mayor (10) looks to catch the ball. The girls’ lost their second game of the season 16-5.

Varsity girls’ lacrosse faced its second loss of the season against Menlo-Atherton High School yesterday on Davis Field with a score of 16 to 5.

The Eagles started off strong with junior Hannah Bollar scoring a goal within the first twenty seconds of the game. The Bears responded quickly with a goal of their own a minute later. Additional Eagle goals were scored by Allison Kiang (11) and Brinda Perumal (12).

During the first half, the Eagles received one yellow card and had to play with a man down for two minutes.

Good defense was key for the Eagles as they ended the half with a score of 8 to 3 for Menlo-Atherton.

“Our defense was more organized, and we were actively thinking and using the skills we learned during practice,” goalie Christine Lee (12) said, referring to Thursday’s game against Sequoia High School. “There was a good portion of the game when the other team was really trying to get a shot, but our defense kept on shutting them out again and again.”

During the second half, the Eagles continued to play hard on defense, preventing the Bears from scoring any goals in the last six minutes of the game. They were given another three yellow cards, two of which were given within ten seconds of each other.

Second-year player Shreya Sunkara (10) accepted the loss, citing the team’s lack of aggressiveness and cooperation on the field as a possible reason for the defeat. She looks forward to the team’s improvement during the rest of the season.

“I want us to collectively start working together a little better because right now we are a little scattered. All in all, we need to work on our offense and aggressiveness,” she said.

A Junior Varsity game followed the Varsity game. This season is the first year that there has been a split into two teams due to an influx of new players. Brooke Betts and Dana Kilsby, juniors at Santa Clara University, coach JV, which currently consists of all freshman girls. Both Betts and Kilsby play for the Bronco’s lacrosse team as attack and midfield, respectively.

The Eagles’ next game is on Tuesday, March 11 against Castilleja at 4 p.m. on Davis field.
