Justin Yen (11) dribbles the ball down the court in the Boys Varsity team’s game against Sacred Heart Prep on Friday. Although the game was close, the Eagles lost 48-52.

Despite a nail biting final minute, Varsity Boys Basketball lost its first home league game of the season 48-52 to rival Sacred Heart Prep tonight.

With a minute left in the game, the score was 43-49, the Eagles down by a mere six points. A basket from Dylan Patel (11) and a three-pointer from Justin Yen (11) brought the score to 48-49 with twenty seconds left on the clock. Fouls called against the home squad led to the final score.

“We played really hard. Some balls didn’t go our way, but overall I think we’re really happy with our effort,” Sean Pan (12) said. “We’re going to keep practicing hard, and next time we’re in the same position, we’re going to pull out the win.”

The team is currently facing injuries, as juniors Nick Nguyen and Eric Holt were both unable to play due to a sprained ankle and a broken thumb respectively.

Halftime and timeouts featured performances by the cheerleaders. This is their first time cheering at a basketball game this season.

Cheerleader Christina Andrus (11) enjoyed watching the game as well as cheering for the team.

“It was a really great, super close game and watching it you could see the guys pour their hearts into the game,” she said. “The crowd really got into the event and cheered the team on even more than normal which was great.”

Spectators noted the boys’ hard work throughout the entire game, especially in the push before the final buzzer. An enthusiastic crowd filled the bleachers to support the team.

“Everyone played hard,” Sravan Rajathilak (12) said. “The crowd gets excited when things get going and it’s fun to see everyone succeed.”

Seniors Will Deng and Wei Wei Buchsteiner led the team in scoring, each with 11 points. Huck Vaughan (12) and Srivinay Irrinki (11) followed them with 10 and 8 points, respectively.

The team’s next game is against Crystal Springs Uplands on January 14.
