Radioshack files for bankruptcy
Long time electronics retailer Radioshack filed for bankruptcy and will close down many stores in the near future.
Radioshack sells electronic parts as well as gadgets such as TVs, computers, and phones. Radioshack also offers repair services for phones and computers. The company was competing with stores such as Best Buy, Fry’s Electronics and Target but could not sustain its sales efforts. With the retailer going out of business, those who need electronics parts such as batteries, diodes and LEDs, for example, will have to look elsewhere or perhaps online.
Radioshack has many different stores across the nation and has grown significantly since its inception in 1921. The retail chain could not produce positive earnings and as a result will be shutting down many stores.
Many students who are interested in engineering believe Radioshack’s closing will make the search for electronic components more tedious.
“As an avid electronic hobbyist, I will be sad to see Radioshack go,” Zabin Bashar said (12). “While I have slowly been moving towards online shopping for products, Radioshack was an amazing experience where I could see, feel and breathe technology from micro controllers to complex circuitry.”
Many others, who have never shopped at Radioshack, believe that the retailer going out of business will not affect their consumption patterns nor the way they shop.
Radioshack’s filing for bankruptcy leaves only one major physical retailer that sells electronics components: Fry’s Electronics.
