Varsity boys basketball defeated Monta Vista 59-42 Thursday evening, maintaining a steady lead throughout the game.

The team started strong with a two-pointer by Eric Holt (11) and kept up its momentum, ending the first half 30-14.

“A whole bunch of players played, which is always nice,” said Lauri Vaughan, Upper School librarian and parent of Huck Vaughan (12), who scored four points during the first half. “The point spread was pretty even across all of our players.”

Eric Holt scored 16 points during the game, followed closely by Nick Nguyen (11) with 12.

“I thought our defense was really good tonight,” Eric said. “In the end, we were able to hold on to our lead and that’s what helped us.”

Coach Butch Keller was pleased with the team’s performance.

“I told them tonight that I was proud of them because defensively, they played very well. There’s no selfishness in defense,” he said.

The spectators on the bleachers included parents and friends of players, who came to cheer on the team.

“I came to support my fellow seniors,” Jithin Vellian (12) said. “[The game] was a blowout. Their defense was locked down. Nobody could get past them. Monta Vista had no idea what to do.”

Taking the court before the Varsity team, JV boys basketball played a close game against Monta Vista winning 55-52.

“It was a nailbiter because it was really close, and nobody really had a lead the whole game,” Namitha Vellian (10) said.

JV plays its next game Tuesday, Dec. 10 against Branham High School in the Lynbrook High Tournament. Also participating in the tournament, Varsity faces Homestead High School on Thursday, Dec. 12.
