Kailee Gifford (9) rushes down the field to score a goal for the Eagles. Harker went on to win 5-0.

The Varsity girls’ soccer team began the season on a high note, beating Andrew Hill High School 5-0 Tuesday on Davis Field.

During the first half, the Eagles evaded the Falcon defense, and Kailee Gifford (9) scored a goal resulting in a 1-0 score going into halftime. This set the pace for the second half of the game as Harker prevented the team from scoring, with Kailee and Joelle Anderson (9) each scoring two more goals, sealing a 5-0 victory. As the whistle blew, the team gathered together in celebration while spectators cheered.

“As a team we feel great about our game today. We are really starting to play together, and we possessed the ball most of the game, which is exactly what we are looking to do. Plus, a win is always great,” Kailee said.

Many from the Harker community came to support the Eagles, as well as to take part in a moment of silence for Jason Berry, a former coach who died this August. The team is dedicating this season to him.

“I feel that the moment of silence for Coach Bear was important because it allowed both our team and the Harker community to honor his memory,” Safia Khouja (11) said.

Joelle was glad that she was effectively able to contribute to the team while playing a new position.

“I believe that I played rather well for being center forward. It was nice to play another position to see what it feels like and what I can offer from center forward,” she said.

Harker travels to Redwood Christian on Friday for the second game of the season.
