The 2020 Near/Mitra scholars were announced by the library earlier this month, allowing eight current juniors the opportunity to delve into deep research over the next year with an opportunity to present their final projects to the student body in the form of a completed manuscript.

Four juniors were selected for the “John Near Excellence in History Education Endowment Fund” grant: Simar Bajaj, Ellen Guo, Madison Huynh and Kalyan Narayanan. The other four juniors were selected for the “Mitra Family Endowment for the Humanities”: Prerana Acharyya, Kathy Fang, Jeffrey Fung and Anna Gert. The students will be advised by both history teachers and librarians throughout the year-long researching and writing process.

The scholars now have seven milestones to complete, ranging from thesis statement workshops, seminal work citation deadlines, as well as a manuscript preparation workshop.

Final papers will be due on Apr. 15, 2020, with presentations of the scholars’ work during a reception in the Nichols Hall Auditorium on Apr. 28, 2020.
