Fifty-two students auditioned for the Spring Musical “Something Rotten!” last week in the RPAC. Students performed both a monologue from the musical and a song of their choice on Monday and Tuesday before learning a routine they performed for a dance audition on Thursday during lunch.
Sophomore Ellen Zhang described her long-standing passion for musicals that motivated her to audition again this year.
“I’ve been doing the musical since I was in seventh grade at Harker, and I really liked it, so I just kept going with that.” Ellen said. “I’ve been dancing since I was really young, and I didn’t start acting or singing until seventh grade when I started doing musicals, but they’re all really fun.”
For senior Ishan Mysore, the musical offered a chance to explore his interests in singing and dancing by trying something new with his friends before graduating.

“This is a great way to spend some quality time with my friends,” Ishan said. “[I focused on] choosing songs and monologues that were in the character of the actual musical and trying to make character choices that were similar to the actual characters. I put my best foot forward, so we’ll see what happens.”
Set in Renaissance England, “Something Rotten!” parodies Shakespeare’s plays and Broadway musical traditions like overly complex diction. The show’s satire set the tone for the auditions, where Director of Performing Arts Laura Lang-Ree praised the enthusiasm of the students and how they leaned into the musical’s humor.
“It’s a really competitive audition this year,” Lang-Ree said. “It always is, but for this one, we have unbelievable talent. I’m excited to see how the casting lands out. [The students] made me laugh out loud for two days straight — it was great.”
On Saturday, selected students returned for callbacks: a second round of auditions for those who made a strong impression in the initial auditions. The callbacks featured separate sessions for dancers, ensemble vocals and principal vocals, followed by acting auditions, where students performed short excerpts from the musical.
The cast for the musical will be posted on Friday.
