The cross country team ran their second race of the season at the Crystal Springs Cross Country Course in Belmont on September 13th.
Seven runners earned medals for top-10 finishes in their races. Frosh Sophie Shen placed second, sophomore Michael Petrov finished fourth and junior Axel Szolusha took third. Junior Aiden Coviello came in seventh, junior Riya Bharath placed eighth and junior Ava Alvarez and senior Emily Bryan each finished fourth in their respective races.
“I’m happy with my performance,” Sophie said. “There’s room for improvement, but Crystal Springs is very challenging because of the hill in the first mile, and then you have to not lose speed for the rest of the race.”
Each grade level competed in its own division, with separate races for boys and girls. Underclassmen raced the shorter 2.13 mile course, while juniors and seniors faced the longer 2.95 mile route. For the upperclassmen, the biggest challenge came on Cardiac Hill, followed by the test of maintaining speed throughout the rest of the race.

“I did better than I expected,” junior Adrian Roufas said. “I took a break from cross country last year, so the first race back at Crystal Springs was tough, but I actually maintained good pacing.”
Head coach Jorge Chen praised the team’s efforts and results. He emphasized the significance of this early-season success on such a demanding course. He noted the achievement of personal records from Axel (16:19.8), Aiden (16:43.4) and Riya (22:04.0).
“Our athletes did really well today,” Chen said. “Considering that this is our first time running on this course this season, with a lot of PRs as well as close to PRs, the future of this team is very bright. I’m very proud of everyone’s solid performances that showed what commitment and hard work can do.”
The team returns to Crystal Springs on Oct. 1 for their first league meet.
