What was the name of the lightning-speed competition that Olivia Zhu (11), Andrew Zhou (12), and Brandon Araki (12) won on January 9? Although that was not one of their winning questions, Quiz Kids is the answer.
Held in three rounds of two tri-member teams pitted against each other, Quiz Kids is a trivia and general knowledge bowl televised by KRON4 and Peninsula TV. Answering on topics ranging from the mundane to the obscure, the team overcame a 40-100 lag against San Francisco’s Archbishop Riordan High School in the first round to accept victory after the third round, with 450 points to Riordan’s 190.
Bradley Stoll, math department chair, advised the three students as they read Wikipedia pages and did practice questions at weekly club meetings to prepare for buzzing in. “Quiz Bowl might seem a little bit nerdy, but I think it’s actually pretty fun. We joke around a lot during practices,” Olivia said. She, Andrew, and Stoll agree that strenuous studying is not needed; instead, interest in general knowledge and a lot of reading is of greatest potency.
Stoll also said that, with the coming departure of several seniors from the club, they will soon be on the search for new members.
