Cheesy can be good – Fuller House 8.5/10
March 3, 2016
It is safe to say that Full House, Seinfeld, and Friends are all shows that will forever live in the imaginary American sitcom Hall of Fame.
And for every one of the television fanatics created through these shows, their dream has simply been to see the casts come back, learn what has happened to their characters, and relive the simple and easy going family comedy that made these shows classics in the first place.
Twenty-nine years later, that dream finally came true when last Friday Netflix released the first season of Fuller House which consists of thirteen episodes filled with nothing but Tanner-Katsopolis-Gladstone fun that America first fell in love with in the early 90’s.
Full House, which originally aired from 1987 to 1995, centered around single father Danny Tanner raising his three girls, DJ, Stephanie, and Michelle in San Francisco with the help of his rock-n-roll enthusiast and brother-in-law, Jesse, alongside his clueless yet comedic lifelong friend, Joey. Fuller House plays off of a similar storyline shifting the focus on the next generation of Tanners: the girls. DJ, who recently lost her firefighter husband in an accident, seeks help from her younger sister Stephanie and childhood friend Kimmy Gibbler to raise her three children, all the same ages as her sisters in the original series. Michelle is off in New York pursuing her huge fashion career, which is actually true and the reason why Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen decided not to be a part of the show.
Played by all the same cast members and set in front of a live audience, Fuller House does excellent justice to the original series by effortlessly streaming the famous staples the show was known for such as Jesse and Joey’s dumb and dumber relationship and all the casts’ catch phrases such as Stephanie’s “How rude!,” Joey’s “cut, it, out,” and Jesse’s “have mercy!” Even then, the show is able to bring fresh, modern yet unpredictable moments with the the remake of the title song “Everywhere You Look” by Carly Rae Jepsen and the four new kids of the house (Three of them being DJ’s and one of them being Kimmy’s)
But yes, for those of you who have never seen the original series, I am warning you now, you probably would not be able to stand the first ten minutes of the show. It’s cheesier than a cheese quesadilla. If you truly want to have a good laugh and grow with another family like America did with Friends, I recommend starting from Season 1. Yes, from 1987. It’s worth it.
Without prior knowledge of the show or characters, the cast of Fuller House will seem narcissistic and obsessed with all their previous glories especially since many scenes are carbon copy remakes of past ones with the old scene playing on the left hand side of the screen. But for us fans, that is the whole point of the remake of the show!
When John Stamos and Dave Coulier came up with the idea of recreating the show, they did not have the intention of creating another hit. They simply wanted to give into the fans nostalgic cravings and undeniable questions of where the characters were now. Isn’t that why the series is on Netflix rather than mainstream TV? The sappiness, the predictable family life lessons at the end of the show, and constant repetition of jokes and catchphrases is exactly what made Full House a hit to begin with. Straying away from that formula would have been thoroughly disappointing to the show’s most devout fans. (That includes me!)
If you are still debating whether it is worth the binge watch or not. Here are my top five reasons to why you should absolutely give into your childhood.
1. Kimmy Gibbler is exactly the same. Same facials, same mannerisms, and same stinky feet.
2. Danny still has an extreme obsession with cleaning. His grandson has it now, too.
3. DJ’s middle son, played by Elias Harger, is adorable and everything you need for a good laugh in the midst of your blast to the past. Spoiler: he made an extremely “on point” joke about Donald Trump in the first episode
4. Jesse and Rebecca. Enough said.
5. Random dance sequences
