Macklemore comments on transgender youth Ryland Whittington

Aquila reporters Sabrina Sidhu (11) and Jacqui Villarreal (11) interviewed rapper Ben Haggerty, better known as Macklemore, on his support for transgender youth at an airport in the Bay Area on the way to a journalism retreat in Maui.

Macklemore, who identifies as heterosexual, is most famous for his song “Same Love,” which supports same-sex couples. He performed this song at the 2014 Grammy Awards. He has often mentioned his strong support in past interviews for LGBT+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) rights.

He replied on the subject of transgender youth after a question about Ryland, a boy who was assigned female at birth, whose YouTube story went viral.

“That’s amazing that a kid, six years old, can really identify. I guess I knew that I liked girls when I was six, but a transgender [individual], that’s a really brave six year old,” Macklemore said. “He’s courageous to be able to know [himself] and share his experience.”

Ryland Whittington’s video is available to stream on YouTube.
