Junior Statesmen of America (JSA) held Pizza and Politics in the bistro café to watch the elections on November 2.
Advisor Daniel Hudkins set up a projector on which students watched the returns live. Occasionally, Hudkins interrupted to update the students on the details of the elections. He informed them on propositions 19 through 27, as well as fundamental facts on the government, taking questions and comments from the audience.
JSA offered free pizza during this event. With 20 boxes of pizza and a smaller turn out than expected, JSA officers brought home the excess pizza.
“This year’s turn out was smaller than past years. Two years ago, it was the Presidential election, so we had a ton of students and teachers stop by. Students may not have been as anxious to see the results this year as they were then, so maybe that’s the reason,” JSA Co-president Erica Woolsey (12) said. Approximately 20 students attended the event, and parents stopped by as well.
Students intently watched the screen as they awaited the final results: Jerry Brown as California Governor and Barbara Boxer for California US Senate. Propositions 20, 22, 25, and 26 passed.
Pizza and Politics is an annual event hosted by JSA. Club members will be attending their next annual event, Fall State, on November 20-21.
