Sadie Hawkins: A Night in the Wild West

Donned in cowboy hats and denim, students dance to songs played by DJ Bobby Kahlon (12). The Sadies dance took place in the gym on Saturday, March 9.

A multitude of lights and cowboy-themed decorations transformed the gym into a dust bowl during the annual Sadies Hawkins dance held on March 9.

This year, Junior Classical League (JCL) and Harker Business Club (HBC) co-hosted the “Wild Wild West” themed dance, embellishing the gym and serving refreshments.

“[HBC and JCL] didn’t really have much money to work with, so the dance was smaller than any of the other ones this year,” Nikita Parulkar (10) said. “The prizes they raffled off were nice though.”

This year, student DJ Bobby Kahlon (12), who got the job by showing HBC interest, played a selection of popular music from remixes of “Gangnam Style” to “Thrift Shop.”

After checking in at the front office, students were given the option of having their pictures taken in front of a desert backdrop and buying additional raffle tickets. The raffle prizes included having cookies delivered to their advisories or parking in student council president Raghav Sehtia’s spot for a week. Attendees then walked into the gym through saloon-door streamers.

Tables were set up at the back of the gym to supply refreshments and serve as places for those tired from dancing to rest. Snacks at the dance included cookies as well as Gatorade and water.

HBC president Tiphaine Delepine (12) says that the profits from the approximately 200 tickets sold will be donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

“We put in a lot of time just buying decorations and preparing everything from the raffle to ordering the tables for the gym and figuring out Bobby as the DJ,” she said.

Many students noticed a dramatic decrease in attendance at Sadies, compared to all the other dances this year.

“When you look at the numbers it doesn’t look like a lot of people, but when you’re actually there it felt like most of school was there,” Lev Sepetov (9) said.

Although it was the last dance for underclassmen, juniors and seniors can still look forward to the next dance, Prom, on May 17.
