PALO ALTO, Calif. – Director of Journalism Whitney Huang and Humans of Harker Editor-in-Chiefs Olivia Xu (12) and Katelyn Zhao (12) conducted a workshop titled “Humans of [Your School]” at the Journalism Education Association (JEA) NorCal Media Day.
The Humans of Harker program began in 2015 and spotlights the unique stories of each graduating senior. The project takes inspiration from the Humans of New York initiative, which profiles New Yorkers on the streets of the city through a portrait and quote. Each Humans of Harker article runs from around 650 to 900 words and includes interviews with the student themselves, as well as two to three secondary sources in the form of friends or mentors.
Through the presentation, the Humans of Harker team offered an overview of how Humans of Harker program works at Harker and aimed to inspire other schools to begin their own “Humans of” initiatives.
“My favorite part of the [Humans of Harker] presentation was to be able to show people the magazine as a product,” Humans of Harker Co-Managing Editor Sidak Sanghari (11) said. “We all worked on it collectively as a team throughout the year. When people saw the magazine they were able to see what we were really trying to accomplish with Humans of Harker, and that makes us stand out. We’re all so excited for what next year is going to be.”
Attendees from other journalism publications asked questions regarding issues with communication with seniors, different media formats and large senior class sizes.
