As the focus of Fashion Show is traditionally on the models and their attire, it may be easy to forget the hectic but essential work behind the scenes: hair and makeup.
Though time pressure can make the backstage scene chaotic, this year’s new hair and makeup team, profession beauticians from The Studio by Angie, handled the styling of “Celebrate!” models to ensure a polished final presentation.
After meeting with the fashion show’s producer, Beverly Zeiss, the makeup artists honed their look after what Zeiss was aiming for. With very little variation in the makeup, and no time for touchups in between outfit changes, make up tones were very neutral, so as to match with every outfit.
A pale lip color, very pale blush, and smoky eyes created the desired versatile look. The color of make up was slightly varied by the color of the outfits that the models were wearing, but other than that, the make up artists had no way to coordinate with what they were wearing. Only a base foundation was applied to boys, to prevent shininess.
Zeiss gave the hair stylists an image of exactly what they wanted for the models. Long hair was put in a low ponytail with a left part, with their own hair wrapped around the elastic to create the ponytail.
“[There was] a time issue, because makeup takes a lot of time,” said Crystal Woodworth, one of the owners of The Studio. Each of the stylists were at the venue from eight in the morning, and worked on the make up for the first show until twelve, and worked on retouch makeup right before the show. To save time, the artists set up an assembly-line style of work, with each professional working on a separate facial feature, such as eyes or lips.
A relatively new business, The Studio by Angie has been open for only nine months; this year’s fashion show is its first large-scale event.
