With upper school faculty and students beginning to receive their COVID-19 vaccines, more Harker staff are set to be vaccinated in Phase 1B of California’s vaccination plan. All education workers, including Harker teachers, administrators, kitchen staff and custodial staff, became eligible to receive vaccinations on Sunday.

“I was thrilled that teachers were finally included in the groups that can be immunized,” Nott said. “This is going to be so important for making teachers feel comfortable coming back on campus into the classroom.”

“When you’re running on your own, there’s no “When you’re running on your own, there’s nothing really stopping you from just walking, other than your own motivation to get better. A major part of cross country is that it’s a mental sport because of … self motivation — learning how to motivate myself to push harder and do better has carried over to other aspects as well.” -Aditya Singhvi (12)

With three rescued dogs, two of which were adopted from an organization she volunteers at called One Planet Rescue, she experienced the scattered process of signing paperwork. She is currently enrolled in Harker’s Incubator 1 class, where students ideate products or services and begin the process of creating their businesses.

“I went through the adoption process myself, and it was very tedious. So I kind of came up with the idea at the beginning of the incubator class,” she said. “I’ve always loved dogs and animals, so this was a good business for me to start.”

Illuminated by soft purple light, a girl drives pa Illuminated by soft purple light, a girl drives past empty fields, singing a song of love and loss, of heartbreak and healing.

This is the opening scene of the music video for 17-year-old Olivia Rodrigo’s debut single “Drivers License.” The song gained almost immediate popularity, reaching No. 1 in the U.S. across Spotify, Youtube and Apple Music and staying No. 1 on the Billboard Top 100 for the past four weeks.

Malar Bala (11), a violinist who plays in the upper school orchestra, felt a connection with Rodrigo because of her young age. Malar appreciated her ability to write about heartfelt and vulnerable moments.

“Just someone our age who has lived life the way that we have and wrote a song that has touched so many people is really inspiring,” Malar said.

“I’m really proud to be a part of a generation “I’m really proud to be a part of a generation that cares and that wants to fight for a better future for all of us. Whenever you’re feeling down, you just be part of that community, you just listen, and you’re re-motivated and reinspired to continue the work of activism. There’s going to be resistance, there’s going to be a fight, but it’s a fight that we need to fight and [something] that I want to be a part of.” -Natasha Yen (12)

Spurred by the police killings of George Floyd and Spurred by the police killings of George Floyd and other Black Americans, the nation and our local community faced a reckoning of how our society perpetuates racism. This semester, the upper school has invited speakers including University of Georgia Professor Dr. Bettina Love, who emphasized the importance of calling out injustice.

But only around 470 of the 958 upper school students and faculty attended Dr. Love’s talk: more than half the school opted not to attend.

Presence speaks louder than posting. At a time when social media is flooded with posts from students on the Black Lives Matter movement, choosing to ignore an event centered around racial justice reveals empty intentions behind performative virtual activism.

Even if the event wasn’t mandatory, the responsibility to listen is. We cannot improve as a community if only half of us acknowledge the hill ahead.

We call upon the upper school to address our lack of racial diversity, while continuing to work toward fostering a more welcoming environment for Black and Hispanic students, faculty and staff. We must not only acknowledge the contributions of minorities in our curricula, but also ensure that our campus represents the world in which we live.
