The varsity girls soccer team won their home game 3-0 against Eastside College Preparatory today.

Harker scored the first goal of the match early in the first half. Though both teams made multiple attempts at the net throughout the rest of the period, neither the Eagles nor the Panthers succeeded in changing the score.

“We worked together as a team really well this game—it wasn’t just one person defending, it was everyone defending. We had two or three players on their one really good player who had the ball, so we were able to stop them from scoring,” left defender Lilia Gonzales (11) said.

Around halfway into the first half, Harker conducted the first substitution of the game. Both teams swapped players near the end of the first half.

After halftime, the Eagles scored their second goal and followed up with a third goal around 15 minutes into the second half. Harker conducted multiple substitutions during the second half, with Eastside swapping players with 12 minutes left to play.

Today’s match brings the varsity girls soccer team’s overall record to 2-4 and marks their first league win. So far this year, the Eagles have also played a scrimmage against Gunderson and five matches against Independence, Half Moon Bay, North Monterey County, John O’Connell and Alisal.

“We’ve definitely improved throughout our preseason, but I think one of our main goals is to work on our new shape,” team captain Julia Amick (11) said. “We’ve started using a new formation, and we’re going to have to learn how to work as a team in that formation, connect passes and get from our defensive path to the attack.”

The team’s next game is an away match against Mercy SF this Friday at 3:30 p.m.
