Five members of the Upper School’s Chess Club will be traveling to Nashville, Tennessee to compete in the Supernationals VI: National High School Chess Championships from May 12 to 14.

Shaunak Maruvada (10), Vignesh Panchanatham (11), Michael Tang (9), Michael Wang (10) and Richard Wang (10) make up this year’s Harker chess team participating in the championships. All will be playing seven rounds of chess in order to defend Harker’s national title from last year.

Leading this year’s team are Vignesh Panchanatham and Michael Wang, both of who were on the team that traveled to nationals last year.

“Our main competition is Monta Vista, another prior champion, but we have a strong team, and with a little bit of luck and some strong performances, we can definitely beat them,” Vignesh said.

The club will have preparation sessions at school leading up to the tournament, and a chaperone for the trip will be determined soon.
