Humans of Harker: Ryan Chen meticulously focuses on detail
“Art gives you a lot of freedom to just mess with things, You can do anything you want almost, but yet at certain times, there’s some form to it but there is also flexibility,” Ryan Chen (12) said.

Whether it’s painting on a canvas or organizing volunteering activities, Ryan Chen meticulously plans each step, focusing on every last detail.
“I’m really big on organization and I keep a really strict schedule,” Ryan said. “I think it’s important to think ahead because you don’t know what might happen, so it’s good to plan and get things done early just in case something happens.”
Ryan’s passion for volunteer work stems from his experience helping out at a senior center in Palo Alto with his friends in his sophomore year. A year later, they decided to create their own volunteer organization, called STEM Empowerment, to teach and aid students at Cesar Chavez Middle School every week.
“You see a lot of variety in people, but you realize that maybe they’re not so different from Harker students [besides] the background they grew up in, and I gained a lot of respect for that,” Ryan said. “There’s a certain feeling of accomplishment [afterwards] because you see these students you help learn more and get better at whatever they were struggling with. You almost end up having a friendship with them.”
These volunteer experiences, in which Ryan gained an interest in helping others, along with his focus in science at school, eventually made him decide that he wanted to pursue a career into the medical field in the future.
“I want to go to medical school eventually, and I feel like service is a big part of being a doctor,” he said. “You have to want to help people in order to be good at what you do. You have to enjoy your job to do well.”
One of Ryan’s other main extracurricular activities is art. He enjoys being able to express his ideas in a variety of ways, whether through sketching, watercoloring or oil painting.
“Art gives you a lot of freedom to just mess with things,” he said. “You can do anything you want almost, but yet at certain times, there’s some form to it but there is also flexibility.”
Ryan believes his approach to art and his artistic technique are a reflection of his own personality. Similar to how he organizes and orders school tasks carefully, he draws with precision and attention to detail.
“When I draw, I have a tendency of being really meticulous,” he said. “I like a lot of detail in my drawings, so usually I draw really slowly because I enjoy adding details to it.”
Albert Pun (12), a close friend of Ryan’s and a member of the team which founded STEM Empowerment, described Ryan as a reliable friend who has grown a lot since the beginning of high school.
“Ryan has always been a hard worker in high school, but he has really matured and become a great friend and an altruistic contributor to his community,” Albert said.
Despite Ryan’s busy schedule and different activities, he still believes that spending time with his friends is what makes him most happy.
“Just hanging out with friends and seeing my friends doing some really stupid or funny things makes me laugh,” he said. “I think that [being with friends] is pretty important.”

![“[Building nerf blasters] became this outlet of creativity for me that hasn't been matched by anything else. The process [of] making a build complete to your desire is such a painstakingly difficult process, but I've had to learn from [the skills needed from] soldering to proper painting. There's so many different options for everything, if you think about it, it exists. The best part is [that] if it doesn't exist, you can build it yourself," Ishaan Parate said.](https://harkeraquila.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/DSC_8149-900x604.jpg)

![“When I came into high school, I was ready to be a follower. But DECA was a game changer for me. It helped me overcome my fear of public speaking, and it's played such a major role in who I've become today. To be able to successfully lead a chapter of 150 students, an officer team and be one of the upperclassmen I once really admired is something I'm [really] proud of,” Anvitha Tummala ('21) said.](https://harkeraquila.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Screen-Shot-2021-07-25-at-9.50.05-AM-900x594.png)

I think without a certain amount of drive, life is kind of obsolete and mundane, and I think having that every single day is what makes each day unique and kind of makes life exciting,” Neymika Jain (12) said.](https://harkeraquila.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Screen-Shot-2017-06-03-at-4.54.16-PM.png)

I live by that, [and] I can do that anywhere: in the classroom or on the field.”](https://harkeraquila.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/DSC5146-900x601.jpg)
![“[Volleyball has] taught me how to fall correctly, and another thing it taught is that you don’t have to be the best at something to be good at it. If you just hit the ball in a smart way, then it still scores points and you’re good at it. You could be a background player and still make a much bigger impact on the team than you would think,” Anya Gert (’20) said.](https://harkeraquila.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/AnnaGert_JinTuan_HoHPhotoEdited-600x900.jpeg)

![“I'm not nearly there yet, but [my confidence has] definitely been getting better since I was pretty shy and timid coming into Harker my freshman year. I know that there's a lot of people that are really confident in what they do, and I really admire them. Everyone's so driven and that has really pushed me to kind of try to find my own place in high school and be more confident,” Alyssa Huang (’20) said.](https://harkeraquila.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/AlyssaHuang_EmilyChen_HoHPhoto-900x749.jpeg)
