The cast of the Harker Conservatory’s production of “Bye Bye Birdie” was nominated for the Best Production award at the Rita Moreno California High School Musical Honors competition, which will take place Monday evening at the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts. Additionally, junior Zahra Budhwani was nominated for Best Supporting Actress.

In a preliminary round, schools from central and northern California showcased segments of their shows in front of a panel of judges. Based on these performances, judges chose the top six productions, leading actors and actresses, as well as the top four supporting actors and actresses to perform in the final round.

I have never been in the competition so I did not have any expectations about what we were competing in,” cast member Matthew Hajjar (9) said.

In the final round, students will perform various numbers from the show in front of a live audience and a set of professional judges. Nominees for Best Lead Actor, Best Lead Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress will compete in a separate judging, where they must perform a five-minute selection of dialogue and song.

“I’ve seen musicals of other schools in the Bay Area before, and every school is filled to the brim with talent, so I was pretty surprised to be chosen,” Zahra said. “I’ve just been repeatedly rehearsing my song and tried to perfect the dialogue in the scene.”

The final round for the Rita Moreno Awards will be held tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. at the San Jose Center for Performing Arts.
