Juniors and seniors went to prom at the GlassHouse in downtown San Jose on Saturday, spending the night from 8:30 to midnight dancing, playing cards and socializing.

The new venue chosen by the Prom Committee was more spacious than that of last year, the Silicon Valley Capital Club.

Pre prom parties included taking photos, eating dinner and socializing with friends, and prom was the last high school dance for seniors.

“There were a lot of people there [at pre prom] and it was great to hang out with my friends and have a nice dinner before we went out to prom where there wasn’t much opportunity to really talk,” Lisa Liu (12) said. “[Prom] was fun, the venue was nicer than last year’s and the food selection was pretty good. [I feel] a little bit nostalgic, but it’s also nice to go out and have a nice night with my friends without worrying about college or APs or anything like that.”

For many juniors who had never gone to a prom before, this experience was unique.

“I think it was a new experience as a junior and it was just really fun,” Rishabh Nijhawan (11) said. “A lot of pictures were taken [at pre prom], and prom itself was actually really fun and a lot more than you would think. The DJ was good, the venue was amazing, and I think the prom committee really did outdid themselves and made a really fun night for everyone.”

Students had their photos taken by a professional photographer or captured at a photobooth with different props such as hats or glasses. The venue also provided a variety of drinks or snacks such as fruits or sweets to dip in the chocolate fountain.

Options for the evening included dancing to songs, playing card games or talking with friends.

Senior Layla Walker, a member of the Prom Committee, helped plan and make preparations for the dance.

“It takes a couple months to plan prom, starting with the theme and working from there deciding color themes,” she said. “Then we create and send out invitations and start selling tickets. Over time we decide the DJ and more decorations, food, etc. We chose the Glass House as a modern twist from our usual venue of the Capitol Club. Overall prom was awesome, the DJ was great, the decorations were awesome, and in general the Glass House had a great open feel.”

On Monday, the Prom Committee sent a survey out to juniors asking whether or not they would like the venue for next year’s prom to be the GlassHouse or the Silicon Valley Capital Club, last year’s venue.
