Annual philosophy series continues

“The DNA of Thought,” a six part philosophy seminar with Head of School Christopher Nikoloff, began on Oct. 8.

“Six Great Ideas,” by Mortimer J. Adler, serves as the basis for the series. Students who attend all six meetings will receive a certificate.

Nikoloff holds discussions on philosophy annually. In 2010 and 2011, he discussed Six Great Ideas, while in 2013, he discussed the Tao Te Ching.

At this year’s first meeting, held during long lunch on Oct. 8, Nikoloff discussed the idea of truth, the correspondence between expressions and reality.

Students compared the seminar favorably to traditional class lectures.

“It had more discussion elements involved and we could better guide the lesson,” Misha Tseitlin (10) said.

This year, the session took place in the Main Conference Room instead of in Nichols Atrium.

“I feel that the seminar environment helped foster a discussion atmosphere that is a little bit more communal than what we might have in a traditional classroom environment,” Andrew Semenza (9) said.

Future meetings will discuss the ideas of goodness, beauty, equality, justice and freedom. The next meeting, on goodness, will take place on Nov. 5.
