“Who knows what day it is today?” math teacher Misael Fisico asked his sixth period geometry class. The response was an overwhelmingly loud “Pi Day!” accompanied by cheers.
Today, March 14, is Pi Day, a worldwide celebration in honor of the mathematical constant pi (π).
The kitchen staff celebrated Pi Day by serving different types of pies at lunchtime. Colorful paper pi cutouts placed around the dessert table served as decorations and a reminder of the occasion.
Adding to the festivities, the sophomore class bake sale before school included a large pie with a pi sign etched onto the top, courtesy of Agata Sorotokin (10).
“I like puns,” Agata said. “So I gave my friend pi-shaped cookies, and I brought a pie with a pi sign to the sophomore bake sale.”
As there were no special activities planned for Pi Day this year, some students envisioned potential events that the Upper School could hold in the future.
“We should have a pi reciting competition; we did that in my middle school,” Nitya Mani (10) said.
In previous years, various other events have taken place in honor of Pi Day. Last year, for example, the class of 2014 held a pie fundraiser beginning at 3:14 pm.
Even beyond the Upper School, Pi Day is celebrated all around the world. The Microsoft store had a day sale of 3.14 percent off on Dell tablets, and students of Mission High School composed “piems” – poems that have the same number of letters as number of corresponding digits in pi.
