During long lunch on Wednesday, Key Club members packed bags with blankets, books, and cards to spread the holiday cheer to children in the San Jose Family Center.
This year, the club started the tradition of meeting every Wednesday in Nichols Hall to work on short community service projects and plans events for later dates.
In addition to preparing presents including warm blankets, books, and stuffed animals for children in need, they created personalized handwritten cards to complement the goody bags.
“It made me feel good that I was helping others,” Ankita Sharma (9) said. “Next time I want to see more people actively participating in these community service events.”
Key Club president Alan Soetikno (12) expressed satisfaction with the turnout and was proud of how much the club’s membership numbers have increased. According to Alan, every action the club members take to help those in need makes a big difference in their lives. He not only wants the club to help the community but also to teach others about the importance of caring for the community.
“I think that Key Club has grown, and I feel like a leader inspiring people to care about the community,” he said. “Someone has to take up the reins after me, and I am trying to inspire them to help wherever they can.”
The students also coordinated with Geo Club to plan more community service events to participate throughout the holiday season and year. They discussed fundraising opportunities to provide school supplies for children in need.
In the following weeks, the students plan to make Christmas cards and wrap gifts for homeless and underprivileged children.
