Senior Maverick McNealy signed his Letter of Intent to play golf for Stanford University next year in front of a small crowd of family and friends during long lunch today.
Maverick is a four-year member and current captain of the Upper School boys golf team, and he is excited about the opportunity of pursuing the sport at a Division 1 school.
“I’ve grown up around Stanford, around the golf course there and have, deep inside, always wanted to go to Stanford,” Maverick said.
Though he was recruited for golf, Maverick says that one of the primary reasons he chose Stanford was for its high quality of education. He does not intend to play professionally, but he hopes that it will remain an option and will consider it if he plays well in college.
Maverick has been playing golf since he was seven years old and attributes his success to his father, who has taught him everything he knows about golf.
Ie-Chen Cheng, his coach, ascribes Maverick’s recruitment to his “tireless work ethic.”
“I hope this signing paves the way for future Harker Eagles to play at a very high level. Stanford is very fortunate to have Maverick,” she said.
Athletic Director Dan Molin calls Maverick a “model for all Harker student athletes” and encourages all athletes to take after his example of hard work.
Maverick is the second student to be recruited to Stanford this year; senior Siobhan Cox was accepted to Stanford two weeks ago to play soccer.
