The Medical Club is hosting a baked goods fundraiser in the front loading zone this week to raise money for club activities and for the Leukemia Society.
The club will donate at least half of the profits from the sale to the Leukemia Society to increase awareness about the disease and help those in need. Additionally, some students and parents have donated money directly to the club. The club chose this organization to support because they felt cancer was a relatable cause to the student community, and many members of the club are interested in pursuing oncology.
The remainder of the proceeds will be used to fund the club’s activities, including laboratory dissections and field trips to local hospitals. According to Medical Club Treasurer Lisa Teng (11), the club provides an opportunity for students to explore biological concepts more comprehensively than they do in class.
“After we collect the money from the bake sales and donate a large portion to [the Leukemia Society], we are going to use that money to fund dissections that aren’t included in biology classes as an out-of-class experience for students and also arrange hospital tours and volunteer in local hospital events,” Lisa said.
The fundraiser began yesterday, when the club collected $30 from sales, and it will continue throughout the week. Club representatives will be selling baked goods in the morning, during extra help, and after school as well as during advisory on Thursday.
In addition to the bake sale, Medical Club will be hosting an event in Dr. Matthew Harley’s room during long lunch on Wednesday that is open to all students. Senior Cecilia Lang-Ree will be talking about her experience as a cancer survivor, and students will have the opportunity to make cards for cancer patients.
“[We] decided to have an activity that would make the patients happier and that would show that we care about them,” Medical Club president Zina Jawadi (11) said.
The Medical Club’s fundraising venture is the first in a series of STEM collaborations, designed to bring together every club that pursues science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The clubs will support each other in fundraising efforts and will work together to promote these fields during the school’s STEM week, which will take place in the spring.
