Varsity and junior varsity cross country teams ran their second race at the De La Salle Invitational in Concord last Saturday, traversing a course that spanned three miles of Newhall Park.
Leading the Harker teams in their respective races, sophomore Samaara Patil ran a 21:11 in the varsity girls race, senior Harriss Miller ran a 18:16 in varsity boys, frosh Isabella Wu ran a 25:41 in the JV girls race, sophomore Cameron Rampell ran a 20:32 in the first JV boys race and senior Robert Fields ran a 20:45 in the overflow JV boys race.
“The hill wasn’t as challenging as I thought because I paced myself well,” Robert said. “Into the third mile, I was very gassed out, but I was able to push through with the cheering and support of my team.”
Nearly half a mile longer than the previous race, this course posed a significant challenge to the athletes because of its length and rough terrain.
“The first race is always a little wonky, and this course has a big hill on it which always makes the times a little more unpredictable,” varsity girls team captain Emily Bryan (11) said. “Overall, the hill especially went pretty good, but it felt a lot longer last time.”
30 Harker cross country athletes participated at the De La Salle meet. Despite the difficulty of the course and the intense heat following the early morning races, assistant coach Paul Lapke commended all competitors for their dedication.
“I saw everybody’s just competing and getting out,” Coach Lapke said. “It’s a bigger race and a more challenging course. Everybody competed well and fought through the end of the race. We pushed hard, so it was an overall positive day for everybody.”
The cross country team races next on Oct. 9th at Crystal Springs.
