The Varsity girls’ water polo team battled Santa Clara High School on Thursday, winning 6-5.
The Eagles had played the Bruins once before this season and won by one point last time as well.
Both teams were neck and neck during much of the game. The match went into double overtime, and the Eagles came back from a two-point deficit to tie with the Bruins 5-5, resulting in sudden death overtime. Anushka Das (10) shot the winning goal, and the girls rejoiced with a celebratory group hug.
“I definitely chose one of the best games to come watch,” said Tiphaine Delepine (12), a spectator at the game.
Captain Keri Clifford (12) believes that the match was one of the team’s most defensive plays.
“Our offense wasn’t as great, but our defense was definitely why we won,” Keri said.
Head coach Allison Lamb also offered her thoughts on today’s game.
“They played really well. I mean if you look at scores nowadays, there’s hardly any games where scores are as low as [6-5],” Lamb said. “To be able to come back […] going into the second overtime period […] shows a lot of character on their part, and a lot of endurance.”
However, both Lamb and Keri believe that the team needs to practice their shooting and offensive skills.
The team will face Mountain View High School again next Tuesday after losing to them 8-9 earlier this season.
