The Varsity girls’ water polo triumphed against Fremont High School on Wednesday at an away game, winning 9-5.
The team started by scoring numerous successive goals, accumulating the majority of their points in the first half. In the second half, though, the team slowed their scoring pace, as the Firebirds picked up their offense. However, the Eagles’ defense stayed strong, not allowing Fremont High to take the lead.
Goalie Sierra Lincoln (12) helped keep the Firebirds at bay, finishing the game with nine saves. On offense, the Eagles pushed hard, with almost every player on the team shooting during the game. Seniors and co-captains Keri Clifford and Rachel Yanovsky led the team in goals, with four and two respectively.
Rachel thought that although the team did well, there were some aspects of their playing that could be improved.
“[Mainly] we have to work on our shooting [and] shoot even when people are on us,” she said.
Head coach Allison Lamb agreed that shooting, especially aiming, was one of the team’s weak points.
“[We] did a good job at shooting the ball hard at the cage, but a lot of times we would hit the goalie,” Lamb said.
Anna Levine (11), a member of the team, thought that the team owed their win to improved communication.
“This game we were talking a lot,” Anna said. “[Normally], we clam up and don’t say anything, and that really doesn’t help with [where] we’re supposed to be.”
The girls will take on Santa Clara High School on Thursday at home for the second time after defeating them in a previous game.
