The Varsity girls’ volleyball team defeated Eastside College Prep on Tuesday in a sweeping three-set match held at Eastside.
The team won their first set 25-7, earning the majority of their points by winning rallies. In the second set, Eastside began to make a comeback, forcing the Eagles to struggle to achieve the close 25-20 win. Miscommunication amongst teammates set the Eagles back in the beginning of the second set, but they soon learned their modified lineup. By the third set, the Eagles earned a solid victory over Eastside 25-14, allowing them to earn the win.
Coach Theresa “Smitty” Smith thought that the second match was difficult because of a new strategy the team employed.
“We tried [a] different lineup. [Any] time you play a little out of position, it’s a little more challenging,” Smith said. “I think [we made] more mistakes than we did in game one and game three.”
Freshman setter Selin Ozcelik thought the team had trouble adjusting to the changes in the beginning of the second set.
“I think we had a slow start, but [as] a team, we pulled it together at the end,” she said.
Though most points were earned through rallies, Smith believed that both offense and defense were key factors to the success.
Co-captain Shreya Dixit (10) led the team with six kills, and freshman Shannon Richardson executed three kills. Shreya also had the most number blocks, with three. In serving, the Eagles had many aces, with Shannon hitting five and junior Mercedes Chien serving three.
Overall, Smith thought the team played well despite minor setbacks, and she believes that every player was a key factor in the victory.
“Well, we did pretty good today,” she said. “Everyone got a chance to play, which is always fun to have happen. And everybody contributed to our success. Game one and game three, we smashed them.”
On Thursday, the Eagles hope to prolong their undefeated streak in the league when they play their first match against Crystal Springs Uplands at Crystal Springs.
