On Thursday, September 20, the Varsity boys’ water polo team played against Wilcox High School, losing the game 5-8.
The team scored no goals in the first quarter, ending it with a 3-0 Wilcox lead. They came back strong in the second quarter, with goals from team captains Karan Das-Grande (12) and Ryan Hume (12), to end the second quarter tied 3-3.
In the last two quarters, Wilcox dissolved the tie, leading 6-4 entering the fourth quarter and ending the game defeating the Varsity boys 8-5.
“We could have and should have played much better than we did,” Head coach Ted Ujifusa said. “We fundamentally didn’t execute the things we’ve actually practiced during the course of the week. Our goal is always to try to get better, [so] it’s a process.”
The Varsity coach further explained that the positioning of the players caused the team to have difficulty reaching the goal and gave them a disadvantage. Ujifusa also said that although the team practiced spatial awareness, it was not well executed.
“We didn’t play our best. I think we could have turned the ball over less. We gave them too many possessions,” Karan said, acknowledging the team’s need to focus on their offensive strategies.
The team hopes for a victory in their next game, an away game held on the September 25 against Lynbrook High School.
