Spotify released its annual Spotify Wrapped on Nov. 30, summarizing users’ listening habits from 2022 into a slideshow-style story revealing their top tracks, artists, genres and total listening minutes from the past year.

Spotify Wrapped allows users to look back on the year and reminisce about their favorite songs as the year went on in an engaging way. Daphne Avkarogullari (11) values how the feature allows her to relive the ups and downs of her year through music.

“Spotify Wrapped is a good reflection of everything that’s happened in the past year,” Daphne said. “Your music usually reflects your mood, so it’s cool to look back and see how you’re experiencing life at different points throughout the year.”

Between Jan. 1 and Oct. 31 every year, Spotify keeps track of how much time users spend listening, as well as other information such as which songs and artists users play most often. Around late November or early December, Spotify will then release a multi-slide story conveying information about different aspects of a user’s listening experience, each slide accompanied with a user’s frequently listened-to song from that year.

The last slide condenses a user’s top five songs and artists, as well as total minutes, into an easily shareable graphic containing all the key information about a user’s listening habits. Many users then flock to their Instagram stories to repost these, making it a hard-to-miss event.

Every year, Spotify Wrapped also gives users additional information and fun facts about their music listening habits. For example, this year, the feature categorized users into one of sixteen listening personalities, ranging from “The Voyager” to “The Replayer.” Through this personalization, Spotify is able to connect with its users and ultimately make them feel more appreciated.

“It was pretty creative of them to create a feature where they are able to personalize to your music taste,” Spotify user Claire Cheng (10) said. “It’s also actually helpful because, through this data, they are able to recommend new songs and artists which leads to new discoveries that I probably wouldn’t have found if it weren’t for them.”
