On Wednesday, May 30 the Link Crew held their first meeting for the 2012-2013 year, in which they outlined their expectations for the incoming and returning members.
Link Crew advisors, Evan Barth and Lori Kohan, and next year’s presidents, Emily Wang (11) and Wendy Shwe (11), led the meeting together.
The meeting began with new Link Crew members playing the “circle game,” in which everyone walked in a circle and a moderator said a statement. Everyone who disagreed then walked in a smaller circle in the opposite direction as everyone else. Students were able to voice their opinions without feeling embarrassed because everyone in the larger circle supported them. This game was used to emphasize that support is key to a good relationship with the incoming freshmen.
Afterward, returning members offered advice and shared their past experiences with the new members, who listened and asked questions.
“Looking forward to getting to know the freshmen was the best part,” Michael Chen (11) said. “[I loved it] when they all fought for the brownies I brought. It was devoured in like five minutes.”
Wendy and Emily concluded by speaking about their goals for next year and going through a brief schedule.
“I [want] everyone to be 100% committed, just to really be committed to the cause and everything that we stand for,” Wendy said.
The meeting left an impression on the newcomers, many of whom are excited to be participating in Link Crew next year.
“I’ve been wanting to take up some leadership role at Harker, whether it was a club or something like this. I’ll be able to grow in this but also meet the freshmen,” Ashwin Chalaka (10) said.
Link Crew will be meeting near the end of summer to give a more detailed schedule and talk to incoming freshmen advisors.
