On May 8, a casual reception was held to induct many upper school students into the Société Honoraire de Français, or French National Honor Society (FNHS). The organization, also held elections for the next year’s officers and threw a small party for its members.
Before recognizing the new members of the honor society, elections were held to determine the officers for the 2012-2013 year. Students delivered speeches completely in French to persuade those who were present to elect them for the upcoming year.
While there were two candidates for the presidency, sophomore Justin Young and junior Sylvie Dobrota, Angela Ma (10), Katie Gu (10), and Paulomi Battacharya (11) were the only ones running for their respective posts as Newsletter Director, Secretary, and Vice President. After a simple voting process, Justin was announced as the president for the upcoming school year.
“I think that a lot of people in FNHS are sophomores and juniors, and don’t necessarily want the large commitment of being an officer,” sophomore Callie Ding commented.
Following the speeches, French teacher Nicholas Manjoine called each new member of the FNHS to the front of the room for the older members to recognize and applaud for their efforts. Of the 36 new members, 25 were present and presented themselves to their peers. To be accepted to the prestigious society, students were required to have, at a minimum, an ‘A’ in their current French class. Additionally, they were required to have completed at least their second year of French.
