It’s that time of year again, when die-hard basketball fans and casual observers alike tune in to college basketball, when for two weeks, bets are made, strategies are tested, and shouts of joy and cries of frustration ring out. It’s March Madness.
Throughout campus, students and faculty alike are creating brackets for the NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Championship. Some students simply enjoy following the games with friends.
“I participate in March Madness because I love the excitement and craziness [surrounding] each game,” Zoya Khan (11) said.
Other times, classes, such as one of Brigid Miller’s English classes, are participating. And the entire senior class is holding an intra-class March Madness competition for glory and the right to a $25 gift card to any store.
Inspired by the 2011 AP US History pool, the senior class officers voted to invite the entire grade to do the same this year. “Everyone had so much fun doing the bracket and watching the games that we decided that the bracket last year should be expanded to the whole class,” Senior Class President David Fang said. “March Madness is just such a great experience for everyone, providing a chance for us to bond and have fun as a class.”
68 teams have been chosen for the tournament. The four play-in games, involving eight teams, take place Tuesday and Wednesday; the rest of the teams join the madness on Thursday, March 15 and Friday, March 16. The championship round is slated for Monday, April 2.
