Estelle’s “All of Me” – 3/5 Stars

by Sabrina Sidhu

Slow and steady certainly won the race for Estelle, who just released her newest album All of Me after a four-year wait.

Although she has not created an album since Shine in 2008, Estelle was able to regain her fans’ support with new songs featuring artists such as Chris Brown, Trey Songz, and Ne-Yo.

Her album talks about breakups, but focuses on the positives of the situation rather than the negatives. By having an upbeat melody rather than dismal breakup music, Estelle was able to capture people’s attention.

One of the most popular singles on the album, “Thank You,” is slower than some of the other songs, but the powerful lyrics portray the message loud and clear. Estelle sings about how her experiences with her boyfriend have made her a stronger person and therefore she has no regrets.

The other songs also share a similar subtext in that they encourage people to look at all the new opportunities that have opened up after a brutal breakup. For example, one of her songs entitled “Back to Love,” says that she is “much clearer now than [she’s] ever been.” Her unique perspective helps express that breakups are not something worth sulking about, which is what many people need to hear.

Even though many people only know Estelle because of her hit song “American Boy” featuring Kanye West, All of Me proves that she is not simply a one hit wonder and that she is here to stay.
